Increasing pressure on the Hungarian-Serbian border

The situation in Ásotthalom is tense, with serious atrocities and armed clashes between gangs of gangsters specialising in people smuggling on a daily basis. The settlement on the Hungarian-Serbian border is facing daily migration pressures. Illegal immigrants are coming across the border virtually unchecked, cutting through the metal fence with a pair of cutlasses in a matter of seconds with the help of people smugglers. The police are short-staffed and cannot guard the entire perimeter of the fence, which is being exploited to attract masses of border crossers into the country and onwards to EU Member States.
